Am I watching history being made? An iconic figure for terrorism has been killed, and I’m waiting for the President, an iconic figure for change, to confirm reports.
9/11 changed us as a country, and as a people. It dramatically changed and shaped foreign policy and altered how we acted domestically. We live in a world more afraid now.
I remember standing outside of my house that night looking up at a plane-less sky. Only stars were out that night, named and immovable, testifying that He was still on the throne, immovable and named. It was an incredible feeling. In those couple of minutes I understood that I was not safe. But I was ok, because I realized that I didn’t need to be in control.
I guess the question is, do you feel safer now? Now that he can no longer “hurt” us, are we better off? He had so much power, this ability to cause nations to heighten alerts, topple buildings, and to be the focus of presidencies. It reminds me of the Sadducees asking Jesus about the resurrection. At the heart of this questioning is the bigger question of who is in control? Jesus’ answer is that God is the one in control. He controls the destinies of men, controlling life and death. He is the only judge.
So, what’s next? What are we going to allow to control us next?
